Some colonies did not want independence (at least initially) because they were more worried about poor relations with native American tribes, Spanish, French, and Dutch neighbors, et al, than they were worried about taxes and regulations. They welcomed the power of the English Navy and Army in protecting their interests. They also welcomed the vast trading opportunities within the English Empire. Also, people were skeptical of the new ideas of democracy.

Dmsds365- Another thing, the colonists had been ruled by Great Britain for their entire lives. They didn't know anything other than what they grew up with so they were scared to leave the old ways. They were also afraid they would be hanged for treason against their mother country.

The real question is, why would they want to give up colonies? It provide income in terms of exports and taxes, and it gave British industry and merchants a place to export their goods. Even better when they could pass laws requiring the colonists to only buy British goods, thus preventing other European rivals from gaining revenue from the 13 colonies. Consider this: India, the jewel of the British empire, the source of much of the UKs wealth, wasn't given independence until they were forced to in the 20th century. Besides, no monarchy in Europe wanted to support republics, that's why they all banded together against France once the bourbons were overthrown in the French Revolution. The French were establishing European republics in the land they gained, that is, until Napoleon came along.

It happened because they signed a treaty for the American colonists to have freedom. It all started when the king of England raised taxes for tea. Later the Patriots raded a ship that was carrying tea from England to America and threw the tea over board. This all leaded to a big war, with the patriots getting their independence
