Cotton requires a long growing time in warm weather. Cotton is planted in early May and it has to be 68 degrees for the seeds to germinate. It is ready for harvest in fall and some is not picked until October or even November.

Places that grow cotton are the states in the Southeastern US where the land has sufficient topsoil. Also Texas and Arizona and New Mexico where they have plenty of irrigation. Outside of the US, Egypt is one country that grows cotton.

Why did the value of cotton grow?

During the Civil War the value of cotton grew because of the term Cotton Diplomacy. Basically the South threatened to not ship cotton to Great Britain and France if they did not help the South win the war. This failed horribly because the South was not the main shippers of cotton for Great Britain or France and both countries had eliminated slavery already so it was against their laws to help the south.

Why was cotton so important during slavery?

It was one of the few things you could grow in the south not to mention it was the best thing to grow back then in that conditions as far as the soil nutrrition.

How did the cotton gin change Southern life?

The Cotton Gin dramatically changed life in the south, by impacting the lives of every cotton plantation owner, and in turn the whole economy of the south. The Cotton Gin is a machine used to separate cotton seeds from the fibers. This increased production dramatically, and suddenly it became much easier to grow and prepare bales of cotton. The faster production of cotton meant that more cotton could be grown, and in turn cotton became less expensive. More people could afford to switch their clothing from flax to cotton. Before cotton was only for the rich. Unfortunately, there was a downside to the start of the Industrial Revolution. More cotton grown meant that more slaves were needed to grow and harvest the cotton. This made it so that nearly one-third of all southerners were slaves.

Why did people pick cotton?

Because cotton was one of the main crops grown in the south, so a lot of the slaves worked on cotton plantations.

Why did more farmers grow cotton in the south?

It was good area for cotton, and they could get rich. After the cotton gin the growth of cotton became a major industry. The only problem with cotton that after 2-3 years of planting on the same land it removes the minerals so it has to lie fallow for awhile to grow cotton. That's one reason plantations had to be so large. Some sections weren't growing anything.

Because the south produced the cotton, and all that good stuff and gave it to the north, so that the north could make the clothes and cloth.

How was cotton picked by hand?

Of course people still grow cotton, but in the years leading up to the Civil War cotton was grown in the South. It was a difficult crop to grow, and was actually on the decline until Eli Whitney's cotton gin was introduced. This simple machine pulled the cotton away from the seeds. Combine this with free slave labor, and cotton became much more profitable. However, as the soil exhausted, the crop moved further west. It did particularly well in an area called the Black Belt, named so because the soil was so dark and rich. Soon, all the South proclaimed, "Cotton is King!"

Why did the Texans want their independance from Mexico?

Can a gram seed grow in wet cotton?

For a seed to grow it needs nitrogen and as a matter of fact cotton doesn't contain nitrogen so it can't support seed growth. But fungus can grow.- If the cotton is kept moist and the proper nutrients supplied, seeds will grow in cotton very well.

Why was cotton grin a bad invention for the slaves?

The invention of the cotton gin gave the cotton planters a method to clean the cotton of the seeds in a faster way so they could grow more cotton. Because they grew more cotton they needed more slaves. By the time of the civil war the slave population of the south was over 4 million.

What were the differences in the economies of the north and the south?

In the north, it was mainly industrial, as the land there was not good for farming. The north was also based on transportation, the Railroad, locomotive, and steamboat were invented there. In the south it was mainly agricultural, and cotton was the main crop. A strip of land in the south was called the cotton belt, and mainly cotton was grown there. Cotton was known as a cash crop, and because of Eli Whitney's cotton gin, there was a cotton boom that resulted in cotton being traded to Europe to be manufactured. So does this answer your question?

How does climate influence the type of vegetation that grows in a place?

An example is that cotton needs 200 frost free days to grow. Sixty miles south of here cotton is a major crop but we can't grow cotton in Amarillo, Texas. We can grow wheat and grass though. And that is why we have so many cows in the Texas Panhandle. I can venture to guess that it is not warm enough at your location that you can grow sugar cane which takes a very moist and hot climate.
