Virginia, aside from being a large and populous state, was also on the border with Washington DC. This meant that the confederacy would literally be next door to the capital.
Answer Because West Virginia was a salient flanking the border of eastern Kentucky and that of western Pennsylvania controlled the southeastern bank of Ohio river in front of the Ohio State. Although very poor in infrastructures and resources it was important for its lead mines and would represent a strategic thorn in the side for the Union. Its decision of seceding from Virginia was a major victory for the Union because the strategic importance of the "salient" turned in favour of the Union Army, which could better control the events in Kentucky and by means of few forces keep at bay the (improbable) Confederate actions starting from Virginia to regain the panhandle due to the great difficulty for an army to get through the Appalachians.
Keep South from Seceding
Kentucky and Missouri. They did not strictly secede. But there were provisional secessionist committees that tried to exert power, and force was certainly needed to keep these two badly divided states onside.
The South (confederacy)'s goal at the start of the civil war was actually not much, other than to secede from the United States. They didn't technically want to start a war, but the North (union) decided that they didn't want the South seceding and therefore declared "war". The south wanted to secede because the Union, aka the United States before the war, had passed anti-slavery laws and the South wanted to keep them.
The main reason the Union fought in the war was to keep the Southern states in the Union. Another reason was to abolish slavery.
To retain the vast cotton revenues. Also for the sanctity of the Union.
Proposed a compromise after South Carolina's secession.

He was able to keep Kentucky from seceding the nation. and he also had the Crittenden compromise, which failed, but was for abolition.

That would be: Maryland Delaware Kentucky Missouri West Virginia also was a member of the Union that allowed slavery. However, it was one of two new states formed during the Civil War, and is probably not the "correct" answer for this one. West Virginia Seceded from Virginia when Virginia seceded from the Union. Nevada was the other state formed during the Civil War. It separated from Utah Territory, and became a state on October 31, 1864 (8 days before the federal election) in order to ensure President Lincoln's victory.
Virginia wanted to keep their original name.
The eight slave-states of the Upper South: Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas. After the firing on Fort Sumter, the last four of these joined the Confederacy. The others were largely divided, and Lincoln managed to keep them on board with great skill. The District of Columbia was still a slave-state for the first few months of the war, though slave-trading had ended there. The state of West Virginia was created in 1863, technically a new slave-state, seceding from the Confederacy to join the Union.
To keep the union intact, in other words keep USA undivided
Most of Virginia joined the Confederacy, but the northwestern part of Virginia separated from Virginia and remained with the Union, and thereafter became the state of West Virginia. Part of the reason for this was the successful campaigning directed by Union General George B. McClellan. Curiously Robert E. Lee was involved with trying to keep that western part of Virginia in the Confederacy.
Smaller than Virginia.
