No, but if you have Playstation Plus it can be set to automatically update games and the console by turning on and downloading and installing the updates. Mine checks for updates in the middle of the night and sometimes when I turn it on there is a message that the games have been updated

The download from the playstation store has to be loaded on too the disc so the laser on the ps3 cant be reading and serving things through the playstation at the same time as putting the map packs on to the disc. :) xx

I was watching a DVD of a TV show I recorded on my media center PC and found that the Download does not continue while I am watching the DVD, but it also does not stop it from finishing the download after I finished the DVD. While it is true that the PlayStation 3 cannot update if it is off, the playstation does not need to be continually on. If you know that an update is needed, you can turn it on, update the playstation, then turn it off. If the playstation is not downloading the update or applying the update it can be turned off. An update can't even be started without the user explicitly starting the update. Depending on your internet speed, updates can be fast (< 5 mins) or slow (hours).
