It is impossible to battle gba Pokemon with ds Pokemon. The only known communication between the two is the migrate Pokemon from the gba games to the ds game.

You have to have two Game Boy Advances to trade with emerald and ruby and a GBA to GBA link cable, another way to trade is if you use a GCN (gamecube) to GBA cable and you use Pokemon colosseum or Pokemon xd gale of darkness to trade emerald or ruby Pokemon to there then use colosseum or xd gale of darkness to trade your emerald or ruby Pokemon to the other game either ruby or emerald. Theres no way you can use a DS to trade with GBA games because the DS is not compatible with the GBA link cable.

No, GBA games can't use the DS lite's wireless functionality, even games that supported the GBA wi-fi addons. The only way to do it is with two GBA systems.

This all depends on the game. For FireRed and Leafgreen - either insert a Wireless Adapter - or link up cable to both games. For Emerald it is the same. For Ruby and Sapphire - you must use a link up cable because Wireless Adapters do NOT work with those two games. For Diamond and Pearl you just go to a trading center for those two games since there is an adapter built in to the Nintendo DS system that is needed for these two games. Currently there is not a way to trade Diamond or Pearl games to GBA games. You can however migrate Pokemon from GBA games ( after you have received the National Pokedex) to Diamond or Pearl.
