I used/am using a router to play Xbox live and also have a new version of PC so I don't know if this will exactly work the same way for you.
First on your computer to get all the codes you need I did the following:
Start, Control Panel, Network & internet, Networking & Sharing Centet, View Status, Details.
You then from that need to copy down the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway (Or just gateway), Primary & Secondary DNS Servers, and you also need WPA key (Sense I am using a wireless router for my interent connection my WPA key was just the password I had set to protect my network.) If you are using a router also make sure under DHCP Enabled it says Yes.
Alright then to input all this stuff into the Xbox go to System Settings, Edit Settings, Change to manual then plug in all your numbers.
Once you have all the numbers plugged in everything should work on Live
