Well, Actually they aren't the same genres so it's up to you. WoW is an MMORPG which means you must have a decent internet connection to play the game. I say decent coz no one cares if you lag.

You also need a good [ not decent ] connection to fully enjoy Warcraft 3 because there is one called Battle.net [ Bnet ]. It's an OFFICIAL server created by the warcraft crew. It's an online battle lobby or gamers who want to show their skills off or have some fun.

One thing I hate about Bnet is that there are lots of Maphackers [MH]. There are people who can see through the "Blindspots" (Fog of war). And those Cheatpacks [CP] where cheaters can do all sorts of activities to annoy you.

Do not get DotA here. Chances are they have cheatpack in them

They are made by the same people (Blizzard Entertainment), and follow the same lore (mostly), but are totally different play styles and cover different spans of time.

Warcraft, Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 (along with the expansions to those) are Real Time Strategy games that have single player and online play options and basically a beginning and end.

World of Warcraft is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. It is a persistent online community game that is totally online, there is no offline/single-player components. It has it's own economy and there is no end to the game. When you close the client, the game is still running on the servers as there are literally thousands connected to each server.

Warcraft, up to Warcraft 3 and its expansions, is an example of a RTS (Real-time Strategy game). As such, it's a completely different game since it can also be played offline.

That said, the Warcraft strategy games predate World of Warcraft, and essentially take place in the history of WoW. If you've played one game, the other will feel very familiar, as the graphic "feel" of the game and many of the character and creatures are similar.

Warcraft 3 for custom games as Warcraft 3's bNet games and Battle.net system is much better. The chat and clan feature is just way better in wc3 than sc2.
