Blizzard Entertainment (the developers of World of Warcraft) recently made a change to its pricing, so it is not to terribly expensive for new people to start playing.
Vanilla WoW (the original, base game), The Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King are now all included in the WoW: Battle Chest for just $20. Cataclysm is $40 and the latest expansion, Mists of Pandaria is $40.00. That is $100 to get the full experience of World of Warcraft. Plus the $15 each month for a subscription.
Now, whether or not this is expensive mostly depends on your idea of expensive. Sure, for new players it can be sorta daunting, but you do not need to get the entire full game at once. You can get the Battle Chest first, play that to see if you like the game. Then you upgrade. If you still like it, upgrade to the latest version.
As for the $15 each month, that is no more expensive that going to see a movie ... once, or going to a fast food joint .... once. $15 buys a whole lot of play time each month.
They make you pay for World of Warcraft because all the graphic designs and all that they can't just pay it all alone that would be way expensive.
There is World of Warcraft, but that can be a really expensive thing to make a hobby.
There is no such thing as World of Warcraft: The Frozen Throne. It is called Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. World of Warcraft is much different.
