In the Middle Ages in Europe, what people ate depended a lot on how rich they were.

Poor people (which was almost everybody) ate mainly barley. Sometimes they made their barley into bread, and sometimes into pancakes or Pizza, and sometimes into barley porridge (like oatmeal) and sometimes into barley soup. But every day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, most of every meal was barley. It must have been very boring! After eating dinner, nobles would usually put spices on their lips, but all that did was temporarily cover the awful smell of putrid teeth and horrifying breath. Royalty? Right… weren’t they supposed to be posh? Anyway, back to peasants…

Peasants ate gruel, a very thin porridge. They also ate homemade bread with ale, an alcoholic drink, or mead, a honey beverage. The most important piece of food for serfs was bread. Grains also provided a source for gruel, porridge, and peas. They ate greens, lettuce, cabbage, kale, chard, beet greens, turnip greens, and more. The medieval children must have gotten bored of all those veggies! Peasants commonly ate eggs because they did not have to do much work for it; they just waited for their chickens to lay eggs, then took them and ate them. They also ate allot of plants that they grew. So they were pretty healthy people, food wise.

As for royalty, they usually had a feast! Breakfast, lunch and dinner was a luxurious process. Breakfast was bread with wine or ale to wash it down, then fruits, nuts, cheese, wafers, and spiced wine. For lunch, meat, mutton, poultry, eggs, onions, garlic, herbs, dried peas and beans. For dinner, there was very expensive wine, spiced meats, fruits, and bread.
