You can only play console specific games on a console.

For example, if you want to play PlayStation 3 game, the PS3 will be the only console that can play that game. If a game has been ported to multiple consoles (ie. both the Xbox One and PS4) then you need to make sure you get the right game for that console.

Sometimes, consoles can play their predecessor's games. A good example is that the Nintendo Wii can play Nintendo GameCube games but will require you to get a GameCube controller.

Also, sometimes companies will release old digital games that can be playable on newer consoles. An example is Nintendo's Virtual Console. You can play NES games on the Wii U digitally.
