Persia suppressed this, but Greek mainland city-states Eretria and Athens intervened during this, and Persia determined to make an example of them to warn other against similar interference.

The punitive expedition of 490 BCE failed at Marathon, and Persia determined to bring all the Greek city-states under control of a Persian governor to keep them quiet.

They bribed some of the cities to agree, and mounted an invasion 480-479 BCE to enforce their control. This failed and sporaddic warfare went on for another thirty years until 449 BCE when the Persians gave up and left the Greek cities to go back to their normal fighting each other.
