I believe you need to buy the game to use the "offline" mode. It will only let you play the browser for free.
If you did buy it then when you log-in if it doesn't see an internet connection it should give you an error that it can't connect and then the option of Play Off line or Try Again will be there. I don't know how to do it manually any other way.
you cant you just play reguler minecraft and you ca connect then you play ofline
The regular download as of Minecraft 1.8 is the Beta Minecraft. The last Minecraft update I believe will be the "Final" product and official game and no longer be a game in Beta.

Update, if it asks you to. 4. Close the game window. The next time you want to play offline, just enter random username and random password, then press play offline.
Buy the game, download the portable launcher, then run it once to download the game files. Once the game files are downloaded, you can play it offline. Anyway, you can't get Minecraft for free legally.

In order to download Minecraft - legally - you must buy it as a registered user. It is a one time purchase of $26, and once bought you can even play offline! Once you have it bought, login to account wait for the files to download. After you finish this up, you can then exit Minecraft and login (password at this point is not needed if you wish to play offline) and reopen Minecraft and login. You have the option of playing offline. Click it, and you are now playing offline!
When you buy and download minecraft, you can just play single player for an offline experience. If you want to play online, just click multiplayer from the main menu and enter the server's IP. (You can get server IP's if you search "minecraft IP list" on google)
