The park was originally opened as Deer Park in 1956 as a petting zoo centered around native white tailed deer. The first ride was a 16-guage rail, the Deer Park Special, built in 1958.

In 1968, the park was sold, the animals were sold off and it began to be developed as an amusement park, renamed Deer Park Funland in 1972. The Spider was added in 1972, but was sold to Michael Jackson for Neverland in 1987.

In 1989, the park owner Roger Jourden turned operations over to his daughter Camile, and the park was renamed Michigan's Adventure. Wild Water Adventure, the waterpark, was opened in 1995, and phase two of WWA was completed two years later.

Cedar Fair LLC purchased the park 1 June 2001 for $28 million and has continued expansion and improvements at the park.
