In Final Fantasy 1 Bahamut can be found on the Cardia Islands. To reach the islands, fly roughly north from the Temple of Fiends until you see a number of narrow islands with cave openings on them. Bahamut can be found on the forested island with two caves, via the southern most opening.
You must find the Rat's Tail at the Citadel of Trials, east of the Cardian Islands (they have a bunch of holes in them) and take it to Bahamut (he's in one of the holes in the Cardian Islands).
In order to be promoted in Final Fantasy 1, you must complete the Castle of Ordeals on the Northern Continent. Upon completing it, you are awarded a rat tail. The king of the dragons, Bahamut, on the Cardia Islands will reward you with higher ranking job classes if you take the tail to him.
Final Fantasy 1 wasn't rereleased on the PS2, it was however rereleased on the PS1, I'd suggest eBay or Amazon.
