You don't backwash a pump, you backwash sand and D.E. Filters. To clean them you change your valve to the backwash setting. To clean a pump basket you turn off the pump, open the lid and pull the pump basket out, dump the contents and place it back into the pump and replace the cover. You may or may not need to prime the pump before you turn it back on.
maybe your pump motor is overheating or running super hot and possibly kind of melting it. Or maybe their is air in the hoses and it is being ruined by forceful Well, the pump has been running dry for days. If it has warped the pump lid then it has warped anything within15" of the pump pot - that is the pipes, fittings into the pump, the pump basket, the pump pot that the basket sits in, the pump seal, impeller. All are probably trash.
That depends upon which type of pump you have. In any case you would have to turn off the pump and make sure it will not come on while you are servicing the pump. If it is a StaRite pump you may need a lid removal tool. There are a few different ways that a pump lid can be loosened, removed, tightened or secured. Some screw on, some are just placed into position and secured with a clamp or wing nuts. Hayward has both screw on and press on lids. StaRite has both - - - as do most manufacturers. If you have not serviced the o-ring on your pump for a while it will be difficult to remove a screw on lid without specialty tool to do that.
Possible causes: holes, cracks in vac hose - bad lid o-ring on pump - pump seal leaking - cracked pump lid or housing - pump basket full of debris - cracked or broken plumbing between the pump and the skimmer/vac hose connector.
It will overheat, warp the basket and lid and adjacent plumbing. Then damage the seal, plate and bearings. Then quit running.
To open a Tostitos jar, twist the lid counterclockwise until it comes off. If it's difficult to open, you can try tapping the lid gently on a hard surface to break the seal.
Check to make sure the basket part of your pump is full of water. If it is an above ground pool an easy way to fill the pump basket and prime the pump is to turn off the pump and set the filter valve to "backwash". Turn pump on and run until water in sightglass runs clear. The pump should have achived primed now. Turn pump off and reset valve to "filter", turn pump on. I do not take off the pump basket lid because the water will come out of it very fast and it is very difficult to replace the lid with all that water gushing up(unless you have shutoff valves or plugs for the lines. I do not have them).
If you have the regular set up that includes a skimmer, pump and filter then you don't have to waste any water. Get an lid-to-hose adapter, that fits over the skimmer basket at your pool supply store. Fill the hose with water and attach it to the lid. Place the lid inside the skimmer over the skimmer basket, then vacuum to your hearts content. Pool Masters
Try banging the lid on a hard counter, but not too hard and only on the lid, until you hear a pop sound.
Yes, I have a set of canisters - basket look with chicken lids
you open the gas tank lid, take off the cap and insert the gas pump..wtf
They can be hard. I usually twist the lid off. (remove the tape first.
