This is a little out of my area, but by chance I've been researching a similar gun. (You haven't been to Kittery Trading Post have you?) This is what I've found so far, hopefully it will help. Peterlongo was an Austrian manufacturer who was making revolvers in the late 1800's, Some of these were apparently actually manufactured in Belgium. They partnered with a company called Mahrholdt and were making Drilings(3 barreled shot guns) in the early 1920's The one I'm researching is a single shot break action with a set trigger. (probably a custom, one of a kind.) Sometimes the bullet can tell you as much about the age of the gun as the gun itself. I was able to narrow down the date of manufacture because the gun was chambered in 9.3x72r which came out in 1900 and was succeeded a couple of years later by the 9.3x74. What caliber is the gun? That might help. I found this tidbit later last night: Mahrholdt managed the Peterlongo guns works in Innsbrück, Austria from 1898-1918 after which he took over as his own under the name of Tiroler Waffenfabrik Peterlongo, Richard Mahrholdt und Sohn. After Mahrholdt's death in 1947, it was taken over by his son, Herbert, who was also co-author of later editions of Waffen-Lexikon. The Tiroler Waffenfabrik (Tyrolean Arms Factory) closed shop some time in the 1970s." ...so if it's Peterlongo, it's pre 1918 for sure.
You will have to provide a detailed description of the action, ALL markings, barrel length, rifle caliber and finish.

when was the carolina arms 16 gauge single barrel shotgun made
A handgun is made to be fired with one hand. Rifles and shotguns, from the shoulder, with two hands. Shotguns are smoothbores- the inside of the barrel is a smooth tube. Rifles have spiral lines cut on the inside of the barrel. These lines (rifling) cause the bullet to spin in flight, improving the accuracy.
Mainly steel and wood. Steel for the barrel, action, trigger and magazine, wood for the stock and handguards.
You will have to provide specifics to even have a slim chance of getting an answer. Who made the barrel? What weapon is it on? Where is the number on the barrel?
