The Armalite M-16 originated in the late 1950s when the Armalite Corporation, led by Eugene Stoner, developed a lightweight, air-cooled, gas-operated rifle. Initially designed for military use, the M-16 was adopted by the U.S. Army in the early 1960s during the Vietnam War, replacing the M14 rifle. Its design emphasized accuracy and ease of use, and it became known for its distinctive 5.56 NATO caliber ammunition. The M-16 has since undergone numerous modifications and remains a significant firearm in military history.

The M16 assault rifle originated as the AR-15, designed by Eugene Stoner (1922-1997) at ArmaLite in 1957. The AR-15 itself was a scaled down version of the 7.62mm AR-10. ArmaLite sold the design of the AR-15 to Colt, which submitted the rifle to the United States military command for testing. It was subsequently adopted into service in 1963 as the M16.
