It would be the .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) bullet.The most standard load has a bullet of full metal jacket(FMJ) design and a bullet weight of 230grs.This was the standard military load.Other .45ACP loads may give you some trouble feeding(Hollow points,or semi-wadcutter loads) but you will not know until you try them.
Perhaps because the Colt revolver contained six bullets wheras the the S&W at the time only contained five bullets. also, prior to the colt revolver there was only a single shot percussion pistol. The colt gave a man 6 shots instead of a single shot. This made a big difference fighting indians.

I'm assuming you mean you want a .380 ACP pistol which has a similar appearance to the M1911. Colt made quite a few.. the Mustang .380, the Mark IV and Government Model .380 pistols, and the Colt 1908. As far as I know, none of them remain in production, but they're not terribly difficult to find used.
