I lived there 5 years and was cold all 5. It snows and has cold rain. The coldest months are Jan, Feb, and March. I lived as the German did and my butter froze on the kitchen table. Only one room is heated with an oil stove. If going to Europe this fall and staying through the Winter go south towards Spain, Italy for the winter months and go north when the spring thaw comes. Oct. is wonderful in Europe. Good weather, no crowds, trees in fall foliage.
