King Philip's War (1675-76) almost eradicated the native people from New England. Of more than 16,000 natives in the area at the beginning of the war, only 4000 remained at its end 14 months later. Every native recognized as a participant in the war was executed. All other native males age 14 and older (1000) were sent in slavery to the West Indies. The women and children were placed in colonial homes as indentured servants. Only Praying Indians and Indians who fought on the English side were allowed to live. The land formerly used by the natives was given to the English soldiers in payment for their service and the surviving natives were told where they could live.
Approximately 3,000 Americans were killed. King Phillip, the English name for Metacom (leader of the Wampanoag) was killed. About 500 Native Americans were taken in as slaves of the Puritans.
