Answer

Russia became involved in WWI because Serbia, and ally of Russia, was attacked and accused of assassination by Austria-Hungary.

Answer

Russia entered the war after Austria declared war against Serbia, because Russia had made itself the guardian of all Slavic and/or Eastern Orthodox peoples, particuraly the South-Slavs in the Balkans who had for centuries been under Muslim-Ottoman domination.

It began with the Boer War

On 28 June 1914, Serbian member of Young Bosnia, assassinated the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Bosnia. This began a period of diplomatic maneuverings between Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, France and Britain known as the July Crisis. Austria-Hungary was wanting to end Serbian influence in Bosnia for good. In response to the assignation, they delivered an ultimatum of 10 things Serbia must do to avoid a war. These demands were obviously impossible to accomplish and done so with the goal of deliberately initiating a war. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on 28 July 1914, the birth of WWI. Serbia had previous ties with Russia and had engaged in treaties obligating Russia to aid and protect Serbs from invasion. These sort of treaties existed between several nations of Europe and ironically came to be a main reason for causing the extent of WWI.
