With the invention of the printing press they did not have to do this and the distribution of news, ideas, fictional writing, etc. was then able to be mass produced at a very high rate and more people were able to get their hands on the materials and educate themselves. An example is when Martin Luther used the printing press to mass produce and then distribute The Bible in German so that the common person could read it and not have to learn Latin as this was the language monks rewrote it in.
