The French Revolution of 1789, has been dubbed a the "bloody revolution" because of the terrible death toll it created. First it was a "mob driven" revolution that was led by revolutionaries whose ideals may have been well founded, but clearly its target of killing so many people, nobles, gentry, other supporters of the beheaded king and queen, and anyone who did not support bloodshed were also targets. Then the revolutionaries themselves became victims of their own "mobs".Much of the killing was needless. By comparison, the American Revolution, once won, did not wreak havoc and killing amongst the colonists who were not supporters of independence. They may have been harassed but they were not hung.
The French practice of beheading was also deemed to be a carry back to days long passed. Firing squads or hanging would have been more civilized.
