One of the biggest factors was the need for new markets to sell and purchase goods. For example, Christopher Columbus was looking for a route to India in order to facilitate the spice trade. Exploration was also encouraged by the desire to spread Christianity. Many explorers were also seeking vast wealths. Many of the Conquistadors who conquered Central and South America were following rumors of gold and other precious metals.
