To find out what life was like in England in the 1600s, read "Samuel Pepys Diary" which was written over an almost 9 year period in the 1600s. He experienced first hand the first stage production of "Romeo and Juliet", witnessed the Great Fire of London, the impalement of Cromwell's head, the Bubonic Plague which swept Europe, and other major events. Most fascinating, though, is his account of everyday life and the social mores of his day. Pepys wrote in a code and never intended anyone else to read his journals. The journals were kept for centuries until they were given to someone to decode. Fascinating!

Life was difficult for the peasants in the 1500s. Infant mortality was very high and life expectancy was not very high either.
