The first English colony in North America was Roanoke, the settlers arrived in July 1584.

Roanoke (in present-day North Carolina) was the first colony, but it was a dismal failure. The colonist disappeared without explanation and it came to be known as "The Lost Colony". About 20 years later Jamestown was established.

Plymouth colony was the first established colony in 1620. Some consider Jamestown the first in 1607 but the 104 men who built the fort weren't there to settle but to look for gold for investors. In 6 months only 34 were alive. Plymouth colony went to established a colony to stay and they came with wives and children as well as animals.
