Mark
In 1912, the currency used varied by country. For example, in the United States, the dollar was the official currency, while in the United Kingdom, the pound sterling was in use. Similarly, many European countries used their own national currencies, such as the German mark and the French franc. Additionally, some countries were still using gold and silver standards for currency valuation.
Since "Deutschland" is German for the country of Germany, the coin in question would be from Germany. "Penny" here is a bit of a misnomer, however, since the equivalent of a penny in German currency would have been a "Pfennig." There were Pfennig coins in circulation from the 9th century until the introduction of the Euro/cent in 2002. It was in 1873 with the introduction of the Gold Mark its division by 100 to equal 100 Pfennige that 1 Pfennig was assigned the value of a penny (or one cent). Previously, the Pfennig had been a coin of more value.
Mark Twain
Before the Euro was introduced to Germany, their currency was the Deutsche Mark. There were 100 Pfennings in a Deutsche Mark.
Before the euro was introduced in 1999, the primary currency used by many European countries was the European Currency Unit (ECU), which served as an accounting unit. However, the most widely used national currencies included the German mark (DM), French franc (FRF), Italian lira (ITL), and Spanish peseta (ESP), among others. The euro replaced these currencies in 2002 for cash transactions, while many countries transitioned to the euro for electronic transactions earlier.
Mark doesn't belong as it is a unit of currency that is not widely used like the Yen, Pound, Franc, and Penny.
Mark - it is not a currency, unlike the others which represent different types of currency.
Penny doesn't belong in the group because the others are all forms of currency, while a penny is a unit of currency.
