They were able to get Natural Resources and goods to trade that otherwise would have been unavailable to them. Not to mention that it increased the size of their country and made them more powerful. This is often characterized by the term merchantilism, which meant that colonies existed soley for the purpose of benefiting the mother country.

I can direct this answer to the American colonies of the British Empire. The most important benefits of being part of the British empire involved security and trade.

Any serious military threats from such nations as Spain or France were negated by the American colonists by the armed forces of Great Britain. Also, sea trade was also protected by the vast navy of the British empire.

The British Empire has had many critics. It's all to easy to place their worldwide empire under the banner of colonialism and Imperialism. Yet despite that, there was a less spoken about aspect to the predominance in world affairs. Some call it "invisible exports" and these were valuable. England exported the rule of law and free trade throughout the world. As long as England ruled the seas, people of good nature could rest assured that piracy, cruel colonialism ( cruel in contrast to most of Britain's enemies ) were reduced and safety for many peoples was an unspoken benefit. In the view of many, the good far outweighed the bad if one was to judge the UK in the 19th century, for example.

How did the British benefit from such a huge empire?

The British, in spreading Christianity & Cricket to the world, became the most commercially powerful nation on earth. Those were the days ! It remains my opinion, however, thet the British disposal of Empire has been handled as well as any. The British, generally speaking, are regarded internationally, as not a bad lot. I cite the position of Mozambique, never part of the Empire, well not Britains' Empire anyway, which joined the Commonwealth. And it's the Commonwealth which remains as Britains achievement in History.
