Admiral Sir Henry Leach was a British Royal Navy Admiral, who served in WW2 before taking command of the destroyer HMS Dunkirk in the mid-1960s and then the aircraft carrier Albion in 1970.
He served as First Sea Lord and Commander of the Royal Navy in the early 1980s at the time of The Falklands War, and was instrumental in persuading the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to retake the islands by force in April 1982, saying that the USSR was watching how Britain would respond to the crisis and warning her that if the UK did not respond strongly, an attempted Soviet invasion of the United Kingdom could not be ruled out within the next 12 months.
Retiring at the end of that year, he published his memoirs Endure No Makeshifts and served as Chairman of the Council of the King Edward VII Hospital. he died on 26th April 2011 at the age of 87, leaving a wife Mary and two daughters.
