In 1500, the leader of the Songhai Empire was Askia Muhammad, who came to power after a successful rebellion against the previous ruler, Sunni Ali. The Songhai empire did not last until 1964. Its collapse was in approximately 1591.

Songhai Empire was at is peak from 1500 AD to 1582. In 1500, Songhai covered 1.4 million square kilometers. It had conquered most of the Mali Empire and had sent expeditions into modern Senegal and Nigeria. In 1582, Askia Daoud died and the empire erupted in civil war for succession. By the time the war was over, Songhai was being invaded by Morocco which crushed it in 1591.
Ghana only traded within Africa and Songhai had Muslim influences. The main trade in Ghana was between salt and gold, but the trade in Songhai was more diverse. In Ghana they had to pay tax to the king, but in Songhai they did not. Ghana was ruled by a single king. Songhai had five provinces that were each ruled by a separate governor. I hope that helps :)
