The leader of the Songhai people who rebelled against the king was Muhammad Ture, also known as Askia I. He seized power in 1493 and established the Askia dynasty. His rebellion was fueled by the fear that the king's lack of support for Islam would hinder trade with Muslim lands.
Askia Muhammad, also known as Askia the Great, greatly expanded the Songhai Empire during his reign from 1493 to 1528. He increased the empire's territory and established a well-organized administration that promoted trade and Islamic scholarship.

The Songhai empire did not last until 1964. Its collapse was in approximately 1591.
In 1464, the Songhai Empire was taken over by Sonni Ali, who became its first king. He expanded the empire significantly through military conquests and strategic alliances, establishing Songhai as a dominant power in West Africa. Sonni Ali is often credited with solidifying the empire's control over key trade routes and cities, including Timbuktu and Gao. His reign marked the beginning of the empire's golden age.
Ghana only traded within Africa and Songhai had Muslim influences. The main trade in Ghana was between salt and gold, but the trade in Songhai was more diverse. In Ghana they had to pay tax to the king, but in Songhai they did not. Ghana was ruled by a single king. Songhai had five provinces that were each ruled by a separate governor. I hope that helps :)
