World War I was initially called the Great War because so many nations and empires were involved over such a large territory on many different fronts. It was "great" because it was big, not because anyone thought it was good or wonderful.

Once World War 2 got going, it was no longer appropriate to call the first one "Great" and people stopped calling it that.
