One of the main reasons that "The Great War" was shocking was because of the new and improved killing technology had far outpaced the development of strategy and battle theory resulting in a huge proportion of human life being destroyed by injury and death.
World War I was initially called the Great War because so many nations and empires were involved over such a large territory on many different fronts. It was "great" because it was big, not because anyone thought it was good or wonderful. Once World War 2 got going, it was no longer appropriate to call the first one "Great" and people stopped calling it that.
So big, so bloody, so terrible (costly) that people believed that no one would ever want to repeat such an experience.
The cold war did not spark the great war
Great Britain and the United States were allies to defeat Germany so the US would not attack Great Britain.
World War I was originally called "The Great War" (not the Civil War)
Everything revolutionary is shocking. So was Beethoven's music whwn new.
The battle was more brutual than people expected

The Great War was not named "great" because it was good, rather because the Great War was was the first of its kind, one that involved many nations.
Almost nothing. If you were wounded, you would probably die - which is one reason the casualty figures were so shocking.
The battle was more brutual than people expected
Shocking
Not so great
Until World War 2 it was not expected that a second global war would be fought, so World War 1 was commonly known as the Great War.
Because people got killed and wounded - the public on both sides had imagined it as a sort of theatrical parade, and this battle awakened them to the realities of war.
I guess so
The Great War. The Great War. The Great War. The Great War.
