Skulduggery Pleasant is the protagonist of a series of novels by Irish author Derek Landy. The character is re-animated skeleton, who battles forces of darkness and evil using magic and his detective skills. After the three original novels Landy is producing six more to be released beginning in 2010.

Skuldugerry Pleasant is a fictional character, a living skeleton brought back from the dead. He was a real person until he was killed in a Secret war, he was killed by the Adept called Nefarian Serpine.

Nefarian killed him. By killing Skulduggery's wife and children, Neafarian had predicted that Skulduggery would not use magicin his rage and make a physical attack, so he left a dagger. Skulduggery picked up the dagger and realised it's handle had been poisoned, but it was too late.

*When Skulduggery says "I'd never even suspect that the handle of the dagger I reached for was dipped in poison", he meant it metaphorically, because Serpine killed him with his red right hand.

Nefarian left a dagger (metaphorically speaking). We don't know how this Exquisite trap of Serpine's worked, but we do know that some where along the line Serpine pointed at Skulduggery with his red right hand (agonising death basically) and after the detective was dead, Serpine put his body on a pike and burned it for all to see. After that all that was left was bones so Serpine had his bones collected and put in a bag and chucked in a river. It is possible that China Sorrows was keeping him tied to reality (making him 'watch' as he so put it) so he came back, and put himself back together. The head Skulduggery is wearing now is not even his -- he won it in a Poker game. His real skull was stolen by some munchkin things when he was meditating. In book 4, Valkyrie manages to get his real skull back for him.

The Skulduggery Pleasant series starts off with Stephanie Edgely, when her uncle is murdered by Nefarian Serpine and she meets Skulduggery, she finds her self in a world she never knew existed. After you have read Skulduggery Pleasant, you may want to read 'Playing with fire' and 'The Faceless ones'

Skulduggery Pleasant is a book about a girl named Stephanie Edgley who gets attacked by a man, but is saved by Skulduggery Pleasant, a man that she met at her uncle Gordon Edgleys funeral. She discovers that Skulduggery Pleasant is a skeleton that can do magic. Skulduggery tells her about a world of magic which is right underneath her nose. She becomes Skulduggery's partner and goes around with him, meeting people, and trying to beat the villain Nefarian Serpine.

When Skulduggery gets captured by Serpine Stephanie goes to China Sorrows for help. China makes her stay in her apartment by controlling her with her name. Later Stephanie thinks of a new name (Valkyrie Cain) and goes to Ghastly Bespoke, a tailor. They go to the elders and get two cleavers (guards) and with Tanith Low they get Skulduggery back. Serpine sends a cleaver to attack them but they all escape, with the exception of Ghastly who is now a statue.

At the sanctuary they get attacked by the white cleaver, so they have to leave Tanith behind to fight it. Serpine is trying to get the book of names so they fight Serpine who has the sceptre of the ancients (a deadly weapon made by the first sorcerers to use against their gods). Serpine uses the sceptre on Skulduggery, but Skulduggery uses the book of names as a shield and it gets destroyed. Serpine loses the sceptre because he drops it and he points his hand at Stephanie who feels pain. Skulduggery gets the sceptre and uses it against Serpine who turns to dust. The sceptre of the ancients breaks after Skulggery uses it. They go back and find Tanith in a bad state, and Skulduggery gives the sceptre to China.
