In Biology class we used to pith frogs before we dissect 'em. Using a pin, we puncture a hole through their skull. Then we move the pin about to destroy the brain. I think this is supposed to make dissection less painful for the frogs. They won't feel the pain from a cutting blade if they're brain dead...i suppose.

You can still test the stretch reflex even if their brain is destroyed since reflexes only need 3 components that are still intact in a pithed frog --

1. sensory afferent fiber

2. control center (spinal cord)

3. motor efferent fiber

The patellar reflex is a type of?

The patellar reflex is a type of stretch reflex that involves tapping the patellar tendon to elicit a contraction of the quadriceps muscle and extension of the knee. This reflex helps to maintain balance and stability.

What properties are not of the stretch reflex?

It is a disynaptic reflex

Is the knee-jerk reflex a simple reflex stretch reflex or a spinal reflex?

The knee-jerk reflex is a type of stretch reflex, which is a type of spinal reflex. It involves the stimulation of sensory neurons in the muscle spindles of the quadriceps muscle, leading to a quick contraction of the muscle in response to a sudden stretch.

Is Babinski reflex elicited through plantar stimulation?

Yes, the Babinski reflex is typically elicited by stimulating the sole of the foot. This involves stroking the outer edge of the foot from the heel to the toes, causing the big toe to extend upward and the other toes to fan out.

What are the examples of elicited acts?

The patellar knee jerk reflex is an example of?

Patellar reflex is an involuntary, deep tendon and myotatic reflex

Can you willfully inhibit a stretch reflex?

The stretch reflex is a normal, automatic response of the body to a sudden stretch of a muscle, controlled by the spinal cord. While it can be modulated, inhibiting it will require overriding the spinal reflex arc, which can be challenging to do willfully without external intervention. Techniques such as relaxation exercises or gradual stretching may help reduce the intensity of the stretch reflex.

What is an example of a stretch reflex triggered by passive muscle movement?

knee jerk reflex

Stroking infants foot results in dorsiflexion and toes to spread apart what reflex?

The Babinski reflex is elicited when the sole of the foot is stroked, causing the infant's toes to fan out and the big toe to dorsiflex. This reflex is normal in infants, but typically disappears by the age of two.
