Tadpoles usually eat algae, while adults eat almost anything moving! Bugs, Smaller frogs, small tadpoles and other reptiles and amphibians that are small enough to eat without causing impaction. Earthworms are a common meal, aswellas backswimmers and other water insects.

Like all snakes, the northern water snake is a predator. Aside from that it is not a picky eat. It will eat fish, frogs, salamanders, small birds and mammals, crayfish, worms, and leeches.

If it lays eggs the mother will protect them until they hatch, after that they are on their own, they can be cannibals so you might want to watch out because the dad may eat the babies.
