There are many different opinions on this. Some books say that they clean themselves fine but if you find that they are getting dirty then you should give them a bath. I also read a book that say that you should give a guinea pig a bath about once every three weeks and it helps to prevent skin diseases. That's what I do but it said that you have to use either special guinea pig shampoo or a mild scalp shampoo (mild baby shampoo is what I use).

∙ 14y agoIt is best to avoid giving baths to a guinea pig unless you are sure that they truly need it. Usually, you should simply wipe them down with a damp cloth. If they do get remarkably dirty, bathe them in tepid water; with cat shampoo, if necessary. After they are bathed, you must keep them warm and make sure they are dry before putting them back in their cage,or they could,possibly, die!

∙ 14y agoYes. You can get shampoo at Petco or your vet, as guinea pigs do get dirty from living in their own poo. However, just a bath once a month or every two months will suffice, as their skin gets dry easily, and it would be very uncomfortable for them to have a bath every week, every other week or so. But if your vet has told you specifically to wash your guinea pig, with a special shampoo, listen to them. When washing a guinea pig, get a small, guinea pig sized container and put warm water in- test it with your elbow, make sure it isn't too hot or cold, remember, try to think you are finding the right temperature for a baby. Put the guinea pig in there, and if you decide to wash it in the bathtub, rinse it off there. Do NOT make your guinea pig swim for extended periods of time, as they will exhaust very quickly and might drown. Try not to get soap in their eyes or ears- they can get infections. Have fun!

∙ 13y agoYes, you must bathe guinea pigs because then all of the germs on its body will be contaminated into its body and it will get sick, so it's best to wash those germs off! Try not to drop it in a tub of a large amount of water because the guinea pig will drown in it, so think of wetting a washcloth and scrubbing it with soap, then lightly rinsing it. Don't forget to feed it lots of fruits and vegetables daily, and let it exercise a lot to still keep fit. Have a GREAT TIME with your guinea pig! (I've had a lot of experience with guinea pigs, having 5 of them as pets, so please take my advice!)
