Well, my dog is inside, and she doesn't smell bad. You can say that you want to actually bring the puppy into the family since it is family now, and it needs to be showed love and care and it needs a warm place to sleep and feel accepted. I would suggest, since it's a puppy, to keep it blocked in one area for a while, though, until it's trained. Dogs also are comforting, so if anyone is ever sick or sad, the dog will go over to you and lay with you and try to help. Oh, and they also can guard houses quite well.

Well I'm not dogter Phil - lol. But the dog could be untrained. It could be a puppy that tears up the house and is too much trouble for them. Or the family just could've been fostering a dog until it found a home. I have 2 Boston terriers. My friend has 2 dogs and got a new puppy, but.... The puppy was to much to handle so they gave the puppy away to a better home. The parents had a reason to give away the puppy. It was for their and the puppys own good.
