I not too sure a permanent marker is required.

If you look at the two hamsters you might find a small mark that is different between the two - colour of eyes or ear length. I can't believe they are identical in every way.

If you still can't find any distinguishing marks, the best solution is to ask you Mum for some food colouring - a colour that will stand out against your hamsters natural colour. Possibly green or red. Add a small drop to it's back and you should be in hamster identification mode.

It's not permanent but will last a while and may leave enough of a mark for you to identify it for a while.

How does a hamster protect itself?

By biting and scratching. Most likely they would run away. I had a hamster a few years ago, they have sharp teeth and mine had claws, so they can bite and scratch, they also hide and/ or play dead Hamsters protect themselves by biting or hiding. usually biting. Biting. or peeing if scared, or mouthing (not actually leaving a mark) to tell you it wants you to put it down. Hamster bite. In the wild, many types of hamster empty their cheek pouches of seeds and whatever they've hoarded to distract their predator's, which are mainly birds of prey, the bird stops to eat the seeds while the hamster makes its great escape.

Is a male hamster calmer than a female?

It actually depends. If you get a hamster for the first time you should get a male hamster because it can't get pregnant. If you get a female hamster it is possible it is pregnant. My first hamster, Giselle, is a female and I love her. My friends have a male and I would like to breed her. However, opinions are different for everyone.

Why is your hamster biteing your other hamster on the butt?

Hamsters do not socialise with other hamsters, unlike other domestic pr, specificets. Hamsters fight other hamsters in the wild when one gets in to the others' territory. They will bite eachother, specifically on butts!

What should you do for a hamster who was injured by his new 'roommate'?

First, bring your injured hamster to the vet for an examination. Make sure it will heal up nicely. *Mature hamsters are solitary animals. This means they like to live alone. If your hamsters were both six months old, they would start to gain territory for themselves. They will bite, scratch, and hiss at other hamsters to mark their territory. My guess is that you had two male hamsters that were six moths old. The stronger one injured the weaker on. Secondly, you need to get separate cages for your hamsters.
