Most pet/aquarium shops I know will take unwanted fish provided they are in good condition. The better shops will usually give you a credit or cash in exchange for good fish. There are only 2 proposed humane ways of killing fish that I know of. One is to place the fish in a suitable container and place the container in a freezer. After freezing the fish can be disposed of (Garbage). The other is to slam/throw the fish down very hard onto a hard surface/floor. Then wrap and dispose of in the normal way. (Garbage) Do NOT under any circumstances release the fish into the environment or put them live into the toilet.
