Boston terriers- These are fantastically intelligent dogs, and have a lot of patience with strangers and children. Boston terriers are not known for being rough with kids and are not big enough to pose much danger to a toddler even if they should happen to play a little rough. Boston terriers are considered one of the best breeds to have with young kids.

Standard poodles- These are one of the smartest Dog Breeds in the world, and are patient, loyal and show remarkable patience with young children. I recommend this breed highly for any home with babies and toddlers.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel These usually get the top marks for safety with young kids, due to their dependable nature and good personalities. They are smart and well-tempered dogs, as well as being pretty to look at.These are fabulous dogs, but they are rare and extremely expensive.

These are considered the best dogs to have with babies and toddlers in the house based on research. I myself, own a rare breed called Kooikerhondje aka Dutch Decoy Spaniel and they are very loving, fairly small (20-40pounds), and can learn quickly on how to act around kids. My dog, Jessie, instinctively learned that she shouldn't jump, be rough or be too loud around children.

If you already own a dog and are simply just wondering where or not to keep him/her, I highly recommend talking to a vet or specialist in the specific breed, or just researching about your dogs temperment and history before considering.

Try your best not to adoption because it can sometimes be a horrible experience for a dog to have to be put up for adoption in a Humane Society.
