Rabbits are small herbivorous mammals that hide from predators using acute sight and hearing, speed, and underground burrows. Together with hares, they make up family Leporidae, and with both hares and pikas, order Lagomorpha (lagomorphs). Rabbits are one of the only species of animal simultaneously considered pets, pests, and livestock animals by people in the same culture.
Rabbits live in a variety of environments, mostly temperate and located in the middle latitudes of the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Rabbits are also found in India, Sumatra, and Japan. There are 50 species of rabbits in seven genera, but the Domestic Rabbit has been selectively bred into so many breeds that it gives the impression there are many more. Rabbits are brown, gray, or brownish-yellow in color, with the black Amami rabbit and two striped black species from Asia being exceptions.
Rabbits are ground-dwellers adapted to gathering food during any time of day (usually mid-afternoon or night) without getting caught by predators such as dogs, cats, and foxes. Their body is adapted for predator avoidance, including ears up to 10 cm (4 in) in length, large, sensitive eyes, and strong hind leg muscles. Rabbits mainly eat grass, which is low in nutrients, so they eat their own feces to redigest it and extract all available nutrients. This strategy contrasts with ruminants, which chew a cud to extract nutrients instead.
Rabbits are able to reproduce very quickly. They can be found on nearly every continent, eat grass, and are able to jump around efficiently.

Actually, the character of a rabbit does not depend on the breed. It depends on the individual rabbit. But then, smaller rabbits have the tendency to be more alert, cautious, and easier to become scared. That's why small rabbit breeds aren't very suitable for smaller children. Bigger rabbits are more easygoing, relaxed, though that doesn't mean they can't be scared. So anyway, bigger rabbit breeds are better for smaller children.
You should check with your local 4H club, or youth farming group. They will have all the answers you need, and there will be people there who share your interest in rabbits. They will be able to guide you, and can perhaps take you to a rabbit judging, to see for yourself what goes on there. Rabbits are judged on their physical characteristics, so your rabbit either has the makings of a champion or doesn't (there is nothing for you to teach him). Rabbit enthusiasts have spent many years breeding for "perfect" results - but you may still have a great rabbit, just by luck. And even if he isn't perfect to a rabbit judge, he is perfect to you, right? Good luck!
The phrase "pygmy rabbit" could either mean a small domestic rabbit (usually called "dwarf," not "pygmy"), or a species of wild North American rabbit (the Brachylagus idahoensis). Although they're different animals, they share similar characteristics, such as a small body and small ears.
