If you eat the white eggs from the grocery store? Then quick answer is a commercial grade hybrid of the White leghorn.

Different hatcheries have different varieties they sell to commercial egg producers. Some large scale producers actually engineer their own hybrids.

They don't look much like the colorful chickens you see on an average family farm and are hybrids that are designed for egg production and a high feed efficiency for large scale cage operations. If they reproduced their offspring would NOT be carrying the same genes...they are designed that way to keep the hatcheries in business and also by the large scale producers to keep the parent stock a trade secret. They are made from a 4 way cross of chickens with different traits so that they have the good traits as far as egg production and feed conversion in them but do not pass it to the next generation.

If you are looking for medium brown large eggs the Rhode Island Red or variation of that breed will give you the best production over the life of the hen. You can expect an egg per day from this breed once they start to lay.

What red chicken does brown eggs come from?

No. You cannot tell the color of eggs the chicken will lay by the color of their feathers. I have green egg laying chickens called Araucana's and they are not green chickens. Brown feathered hens lay both white and brown eggs as do white hens. Feather color is not an indicator of egg color, breed determines the color of the egg.

Why do some chickens lay brown or white eggs?

a regular chicken- all chickens lay brown egges! No, not all chickens lay brown eggs. There are lots of breeds which lay white or creamy-white shelled eggs, and a few which lay blue or olive-green shelled eggs (Araucanas, Ameraucanas & Crested Legbars). Among those which do lay brown eggs, there are variations from breeds which lay light brown eggs (sometimes called 'tinted'), through various shades of mid-brown, to a few breeds which lay very dark brown eggs: Marans, Welsummers & Penedesencas.

What are some types of hens that lay large or many eggs?

Leghorns! They lay an avg. of 300 per yr. They lay very large eggs for their little bodies which require less feed than other "good layer" breeds. Rhode Island Reds are very popular because of their dual purpose. When eggs production wanes, they can be eaten. They lay an avg. of 200 per yr. Orbington Buffs are comparable to RIR. Barred Rocks are also excellent egg laying chickens. Red Sex Links (also known as Red Stars) lay up to 280 eggs per yr. There are a couple of others that I am not as familiar with but everything I have read (and experienced) rate Leghorns as the best. These are the white chickens that are used for commercial egg production. Free range/ organic white eggs are just as nutritious as free range/organic brown eggs. Brown eggs simply have more pigment making them appear "richer". Commercial white eggs are not as nutritious, hence some of the confusion

'What is the difference between white shelled eggs and brown shelled hen eggs'?

White eggs and brown eggs are a result of the type of chicken that lays that egg. For the most part, white eggs are produced by chickens with white feathers. Chickens with brown or red feathers lay brown eggs. There are chickens who produce speckled eggs too.

Why are fertilized eggs brown?

Fertilized eggs are not brown because they have been fertilized. The chickens do not colour code the one's that are viable and leave the rest of them white. Any egg of whatever colour can be fertile. I have incubated white, brown, green and blue eggs many times. Most have hatched. The egg colour comes from the various breeds of chicken that laid the egg, it does not change colour for any reason unless you dye them at Easter.

Are brown eggs better for us?

NO. There is no nutritional difference between a white egg and a brown egg. Different breeds of chickens lay different colored eggs. The color of the egg has nothing to do with the contents of the egg. White eggs are and have been popular with the home consumer because they give the impression of clean and pure. Brown eggs are most popular with restaurants as it is easier to spot and remove a small piece of brown shell from a large batch of eggs in a recipe.

Can one chicken lay 2 eggs in one day?

They can, but is unlikely. Most hens lay a egg every 25 hours. Actually, no. There are currently no breeds that will produce two eggs within 24 hours. Many breeds actually take longer than 24 hours to lay an individual egg.
