Sounds like you have spoiled your pet and haven't let them know who is boss in your household. Most breeds of dogs do not like their nails cut. You should be firm with them, but since this has obviously been going on for sometime it's best to let your vet or groomer cut their nails. Like children, dogs will often act up with their owner, yet be quite placid when a vet or groomer deals with them.

Never sedate your dog unless your vet gives approval. Nail clipping is not a good reason to sedate your pet!

Sorry, but I was told by my VET that I needed to tranquilize my dog to cut her nails and get her groomed, and my dog is a pet and knows exactly who is boss. She is very nervous and her original owners abused her, so when it comes time to cut her nails she MUST be tranquilized. BTW, the VET refused to cut her nails because she was too nervous and told me to give her tranquilizers to get her groomed. And she is not spoiled, just saying.

How short should I cut my dogs nails?

You should clip your dogs nails only a little bit at a time. There is something called a "quick" in dog's nails. If you cut into the quick then the nail will start to bleed and it will have hurt the dog, to a point to that they dog won't let you clip their nails anymore. If you clip the nails a little bit say once a week, the quick will start to recede, making it safer to clip your dogs nails without hurting them.

What is the best way to trim a dogs nails?

Your dog's nails should barely touch the ground when s/he walks. If you hear clicking noises on the floor when they walk, it's time to cut them. You should use clippers designed specifically for pets. Ask your vet or groomer for advice. Make sure the clippers are sharp and not dull. Start at the tip of the nail and cut a little at a time. Look at the cut edge of the nail. When you start to see pale pink tissue near the top of the cut edge, STOP. You can use a nail file to smooth the edges further. Avoid cutting into the quick. The quick contains nerves and blood vessels, if cut it is painful and will bleed easily. On white nails, the quick is the pink section. Be careful when cutting darker nails, as the quick is much harder to see. If the tip of the nail begins to bleed, apply pressure using styptic powder or a substitute such as baby powder. Do not wipe the blood clot off the tip of the nail once the bleeding has stopped.

Can you put super glue on a dogs nail if you cut the quick?

Seriosly... why would u ever do that????? You would do this if your dog has a split/cracked toenail or have been cut to short to expose the quick. Yes you can use superglue to mend the nail together or stop the bleeding. They do make specific styptic gel for this purpose as well. If you have cut the quick, or trim your dog's nails regularly, it's best to have this on hand. If your dog's nail is cracked, super glue it together to mend it.
