The northern pike (known as the pike in Britain, sometimes known as jack / jackfish in Canada), Esox lucius, is a species of carnivorous fish of the genus Esox (the pikes). They are typical of brackish and freshwaters of the northern hemisphere (i.e. holarctic in distribution).
Being carnivorous means that they eat other fishes.
Jack fish as Manitobans call them is the common name refering to northern pike. Northern pike are more internationally known as pickerel. However in Canada, Canadians call walleye, pickerel. In reality and to put to rest the confusion:
Jack fish are Northern Pike and Northern pike are Pickerel.
Walleye is Walleye, Not pickerel as many Canadians think.
