I have one of those spiders in my garden in Scotland. It is seven or so millimetres long and has the stripes running lengthwise. It is rapidosa rabida or rabid wolf spider. It is very agile and ferocious and lives on smaller insects. I have seen it jump from the wall and catch a small flying insect in mid air and return to the wall on its silk thread. In the sense it's a bit like spiderman. It lives on one wall of my house and it spends the summer going backwards and forwards. If you put your finger near it then it turns to face you. It is not dangerous to people.
