How does dressage work?
Dressage is what many people would consider the Ballet of the horse world. What appears beautiful and effortless to the audience is in fact an achievement in art and athleticism requiring years of development and dedication for both horse and rider. Dressage is performed in a 20 x 60 meter arena with a set of letters that designate where movements are to be executed; the letters also assist the rider in judging specific distances, such as the size of a circle. In addition, lower level tests may also be adjusted and performed in what is referred to as the short arena, which is 20 x 40 meters
What are the moves of dressage?
Dressage tests generally require the horse to walk, trot, and canter. Depending on the level of the test, circles (10 or 20 m), changes of direction, and serpentines may also be required. Do you have to plait up for a dressage test show?
Yes, you should plait your horse's mane and tail for lower level dressage. Grooming your horse and plaiting up shows respect to the judges. In higher level dressage, you may not need to, although you should always check with your instructor and the rules of the show. You will see if you watch videos of high level dressage test horses are unplaited and unbraided.

You can usally get it online. If not, join the USDF (United States Dressage Federation) and you can register your horse for Dressage that opens up a whole bunch of new shows. And most likely you can get the Level 2 most current tests there.

The movements include collected, medium, and extended trot; collected and extended canter; extended and medium walk; counter canter; flying change of lead; shoulder in; half pass; and halt. The purpose of the dressage test in eventing is to demonstrate that the horse is obedient to the rider's directions - an absolute necessity for a cavalry mount, cavalry competitions being the origin of modern eventing. In addition, the dressage is done on the first day of the competition (or, in lower-level competitions that are completed on a single day, the first thing in the morning) to show that the horses are obedient even when they are rested and full of energy. The dressage tests ridden by eventers are less demanding than those ridden in regular dressage competitions, and the stadium jumping (third phase) is less demanding than that ridden by the jumpers. The eventing horses are generalists who must do a lot of things well, as opposed to dressage or stadium jumping horses who can concentrate on doing one thing extremely well.
