You're referring to a "lasso", right? From Spanish: "lazo"

What you are probably thinking of is a 'reata'. It is a Braided Rawhide Reata Ranch Rope

Traditionally used by Spanish and Mexican vaqueros, these reatas are the original rope used by cowboys. The craft of braiding a reata is one that has been passed on from one generation to the next and is quickly becoming an endangered art and skill. Handmade with 4 precisely cut rawhide strips braided together. Offers exceptional strength and durability. They are usually 5/16" in diameter and 60 feet long. Cowboys still use them today on ranches and you can tell by looking at their saddles (even though a rope may not be present on the saddle) if they use one because they will have mule hide wrapped on the saddle horn or it may be slick metal. Rodeo cowboys have rubber wrapped on their horns because they use shorter ropes (usually of 30 to 35 feet long)...which causes greater friction and they don't have to take as many turns (dally) to stop or turn the cattle or horse.

Those cowboys that use a reata have to take many turns (dally) to stop or turn the cattle or horse and they may have to 'feed some coil' before they can turn or stop a 'steer' or cow out on the range. As you may imagine...like braiding a reata, using one is also an art form that is carried out still today on many ranches. I've been there, done that, genuine antique cowboy!

You can also buy a 60 foot rope in poly or nylon...which is more common today and a lot less expensive than a hand braided reata.

Hope this helps out.

What are types of jump roping?

You can jump rope with one rope by yourself. You can have two people hold a long rope on either, turning it while you jump. There is also a type called Double Dutch, where two people hold two ropes, one end in each hand. They turn the ropes in opposite directions so for example: if I'm turning one rope in my left hand clockwise, then I turn the rope in my other hand counter clockwise. Not at the same time though. I'd start turning with my left hand, then move in with my right in order to create rhythm. Double Dutching is a bit fast paced and takes a lot of practice.
