You spay a female dog and cat, you neuter a male dog and cat.
It really all depends on what area you live in and what the vet charges. It can range anywhere from 15 dollars to 100 depending on the vet. Lots of places do low cost spaying and neutering. Your local humane society will do it at half the cost. Search low cost spay and neuter to see what programs they have in your area.
It is recommended to spay a mother cat when the kittens are weaned, but be sure to check when your vet is most comfortable to spay her. The spay will not cause her to behave any differently to her kittens, but is advised to wait until the kittens are on solid food as the procedure can disrupt, or even stop, milk flow.
your local vet will be able to neuter your cat If you are in the US, there are many options available for no- or low-cost spay and neuter programs. After needing to do the research myself, I saved everything in one article. That article is titled "How to Get Your Cat Spayed or Neutered at No- or Low-Cost" and can be found here: http://www.ehow.com/how_5433473_cat-spayed-neutered-lowcost.html
If the cat is a male, to neuter them is less expensive because the surgery is less intrusive. Female spaying is a bit more expensive. The fee varies considerably, if you choose a private Vet to do the surgery it will be more expensive than if you choode a clinic. Google "Low cost spay and Neuter" and there is usually a very resonable center available for 45 to 90$. It is a first come first serve basis, so once the surgery times are booked they will not accept any more pets. Hope tht this helps,
