The same problem occurred with my 12-year old shorthair male cat. It turned out that he had a bad tooth that would periodically become inflamed causing the gums to swell. The veterinarian felt the best option was to remove the tooth to prevent the risk of it becoming infected. I was told that the tooth would eventually cause pain to the animal and become a hazard to Buster's (the cat) overall health. Don't know if a tooth infection/cavity (carie) caused the swelling, but if a tooth infection becomes bad enough, it can actually destroy the bone of the jaw and/or become systemic (getting into the bloodstream), either of which may force the animal to be put down or die. If it is a tooth-related problem, you may notice that the animal only chews on one side, seems to take longer to eat, or even loses weight (the pain from chewing limits eating).
It has what is called bladder bloat.
